December is a month filled with celebration, and it’s not just Christmas. People of the Jewish faith celebrate the eight nights of Hannukah, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is observed as Kwaanza in many African-American homes and communities. That’s just the beginning. Along with these and other celebrations in other cultures, there are some rather unique days, too. All you have to do is just search “weird holidays,” or have a Facebook friend who points out these unique days in a daily post. Here are some of the more interesting days being observed this month:
December 6-Put on Your Own Shoes Day
December 15-International Cat Herders Day (or, in the world of elementary education, Christmas Party Day), Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, and Lemon Cupcake Day
December 21-Don’t Make Your Bed Day and Flashlight Day
December 30-BACON DAY!
People all over are looking for something, anything to celebrate, to put a bit of happiness and joy into an ever-darkening world. We as believers don’t have to look to the calendar for National Spinach Day or Make Your Bed Day or other such nonsense. We have reason to celebrate every single day. And what better time to remind ourselves of some of these than in this season of Christmas-the coming of our Messiah! These are true one-size-fits-all, flattering to everyone, and guaranteed never to be returned!
You are God’s own chosen child. Galatians 4:4-6: But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Your sins are not only forgiven, but forgotten. Psalm 103:11-13 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our transgressions from us.As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
God has always, always, loved us. Psalm 103:17-18 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
God will never forget who you are. Isaiah 49:15-16 Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
God takes care of His beloved children. Philippians 4:19-20 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
And, the greatest reason of all-
God is coming to take us home. HOME! John 14:1-3 Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
Now, that’s a reason to celebrate! Merry Christmas, everyone!
Thank you for reminding us Missy.
