Luke 10 tells of a time when Jesus entered a village. In that village lived two sisters, Mary and Martha. They were the sisters of Lazarus and close friends of Jesus. He went to their house to visit with them. During His visit, Martha was busy serving and preparing the house for Jesus, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to His teaching. Martha then went to Jesus and asked Him if He cared that Mary left her to do all the work. Jesus replied by telling Martha that she was worried about too many things when all she needed to be doing was listening to Jesus, just as Mary was doing.
Many times we tend to be like Martha. We go through life without slowing down to spend time with the one person who truly matters, Jesus Christ. We have the best intentions, and we tell ourselves that we will read our Bible and pray. Sadly, five minutes turns into an hour, and an hour turns into a day, and a day can quickly turn into a week. As Christians we should be so dependent on Christ and His word that we need it just as badly as the air we breathe. David vividly describes the attitude we should possess in Psalms 63: 1, “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.”
Satan also loves to use certain areas of my life such as church, school, family, friends, and college preparation to entangle me in the web of busyness. These areas all represent good things that the Lord has graciously given me. However, oftentimes they take up too much of my time and effort, and I find myself seeking after the things of this world instead of things with eternal value. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Our only focus in life should be seeking after the Lord.
When we align our lives to His will, He begins to reveal to us His plans for our lives. He alone is our true source of contentment in this life. If we live our lives too busy worrying about everything except the Lord, we will miss out on what He is trying to show and tell us. He desires for us to live abundant lives full of purpose for Him. So, like Mary, we must stay at His feet, hanging on every word He has to tell us.
My prayer for every person who reads this article is that you will let go of the busyness that is consuming your life and say yes to spending time with Jesus. I pray that you will desire the Lord over anything this world offers you and that you will experience true joy and contentment that only comes from living a life full out for Him. He is always there, ready and willing to take you in.
