Speak, Lord, Speak

In this day and age, we live with technology similar to that seen before its time in the classic cartoon, “The Jetsons.”  We have technology that we can actually talk to and instantly receive a response.  Parents around the world may be suiting up their kiddos for a school day when they pause to say, “Alexa, what’s the weather like today?” And we are not surprised when the electronic device responds with something like, “The weather in Meridian today will be slightly warm with a high of 67 degrees and a 90% chance of rain showers.”  iPhone users will speak with Siri, and it’s no surprise when “she” responds.  Continue reading

We’re Starving

I ate really well on Sunday. It’s my day to rest and worship with my family, so I ate several huge, vitamin-filled meals. Someone served the food to me, too, so what’s better than that? I didn’t even have to make it for myself, so by the end of the day, I was fat and happy. Then Monday came, and even though I’m off on Mondays, I filled my day with a MILLION things I needed to do for the week. The hunger pangs started toward the end of the day, so I ate a little snack to get me by, and then I kept going full speed ahead. No slowing down, y’all! Continue reading

Lamp and Light

Research tells us that young children need to hear around 21,000 words per day.  These words help them develop their vocabulary, language skills, and will make them better students once they enter school.  My three-year-old hears this allotment, no doubt.  He’s the youngest of four, so there’s no shortage of words in our house. Handling Life’s Unexpected Struggles God’s Way

Life has a way of throwing things at us unexpectedly,  doesn’t it? You go through a period of time, a time of calm and peace, you might say, and everything seems to be going so well. Your boss tells you how much he appreciates the hard work you are putting in. Your sweet husband makes you breakfast. You have financial plans in place for all the things you want to accomplish in the future.  All of the pieces seem to be falling into place when all of a sudden, the car breaks down. Stop Being a Crumb-Catcher

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23: 1-6 ESV) These are verses that I have read and listened to in sermons quite often. Sometimes, however, I feel like my mind is on autopilot when I listen to them, but there is so much truth in hope in the 23rd Psalm.  Continue reading “Stop Being a Crumb-Catcher”

Is It Time to Say Yes?

When someone learns that I teach piano and voice, there is an automatic assumption that I spend my days working with children. For the overwhelming majority of my students, that is true. But I have a feeling you would be just as surprised as anyone to learn that I do teach adults, too. One of the ladies I work with is hardly a beginner. She has been the pianist at her church for a couple of decades, and I’m really more a coach in keeping her skills fresh and a consultant as she plans what she will play for her church. It has become a great friendship, and often the “lesson” turns more into a conversation about the things of God and our journeys with Him.  Continue reading “Is It Time to Say Yes?”

Trust and Obey

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.”

I have some friends who have a “word of the year.”  It’s a word that the Lord has impressed on them, and He seems to be teaching them all the time about that word. Everywhere they turn, they are being shown a new thing by the Lord about their word of the year. I totally get that, because for about five years, God was impressing a word onto my heart. As in, it took FIVE YEARS for the word to truly sink in. And the word is….

Winter Thoughts

As I write, it is 29 degrees and 1:00 in the afternoon, odd weather for Mississippi.  It is Monday, New Year’s Day.  The day started out at 17 degrees.  It’s beautiful outside, though, sunny and blue skies.  I’m sitting in the coveted favorite chair, an old but very comfortable recliner in front of the fireplace.  This fireplace is one of the joys of winter.  Continue reading “Winter Thoughts”

Seasons Change

At the beginning of December, an amazing thing happened.  It snowed!  In Mississippi!  Snow flurries happen close to never here, so the four or five inches were such a happy surprise.  My favorite tree at our house sparkled in the white, fluffy dust.  The kids rejoiced that there was no school; we frolicked in the snow, made snow ice cream that apparently only I like (who are these kids?!), drank hot chocolate, crafted snow angels, the works.  The day could not be beat.  My eye kept going back to my tree, though.  Continue reading “Seasons Change”
